Dubai Silicon Oasis and Ministry of Environment and Water Host Educational Exhibition
Event Marks World Environment Day
Dubai-UAE: 05 June, 2011 – Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the integrated free zone technology park, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water, today rolled-out a three-day educational exhibition to raise awareness on environment issues and safe practices.
The event that will run at the Dubai Mall until 7 June marks the World Environment Day 2012. It has successfully attracted the participation of several federal and private entities including the Federal Electricity and Water Authority, Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, Environment Center for Arab Towns, Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Bee’ah and Imdaad. The exhibition is spotlighting the green and sustainable development projects pioneered by the participating entities. In addition, theatre plays by students and a fashion show of clothes made from recycled materials will serve as highlights of the edutainment initiative.
The campaign comes as part of a long term national initiative to build a green economy in the UAE under the slogan ‘A green economy for sustainable development’. Launched in January 2012 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative seeks to position the UAE as a global leader in sustainable development and a centre for the export and re-export of green products and technologies.
His Excellency Dr Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, said: “Transforming the UAE into a green economy is not the sole responsibility of the public sector. The society is equally accountable with each individual tasked to play a vital role. Applying purchasing principles and controlling consumption patterns must therefore be endorsed. It is only appropriate that this year the World Environment Day is themed Green Economy: Are you involved?.”
Eng. Muammar Al Katheeri, Executive Vice-President of Engineering Management at Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, said: “Environment is a key pillar of DSO’s three-pronged corporate social responsibility strategy that also focuses on human capital and the community. Our initiatives are aimed at raising awareness on key environmental issues to ensure a better life for future generations.
“The adoption of environmentally safe practices has significantly impacted our bottom line. We have successfully achieved savings of nearly AED4.1 million from irrigation water usage, AED649,000 from water consumption management and AED6.5 million in savings from efficient electricity consumption. We hope to encourage other entities and corporates to follow a similar path through sharing such results, which will positively impact the environment and overall business performance.”
The educational exhibition comes as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between DSO and the Ministry of Environment and Water to host joint initiatives that raise environmental awareness and encourage the community to adopt eco-friendly practices.
Wholly-owned by the Government of Dubai, DSO operates as a free zone for companies producing semiconductors, microelectronics, and other high-tech products seeking to establish regional headquarters and centres of research and development in the Middle East and Africa.
